| Abstract: | Because sports are stylized combat, sports may follow power laws similar to those found for wars, individual clashes, and acts of terrorism. We show this fact for football (soccer) by adjusting power laws that show a close relationship between rank and points won by the clubs participating in the latest seasons of the top fifteen European football leagues. In addition, we use Shannon entropy for gauging league competitive balance. As a result, we are able to rank the leagues according to competitiveness. |

| Abstract: | The Federal Institute for Sports Science (BISp) commissioned the Institute of Economic Structures Research (GWS) to set up a sport satellite accounts (SSA) for the reporting year 2008 according to the international recommendations. Looking on the results of the German SSA for the reference year 2008 identifies that the direct gross value added of sports sum up to a total of almost 73.1 billion Euros. This means that in 2008, sport-related services represented 3.3% of the German gross value added to the amount of 2,217 billion Euros. Some 1.765 million people were directly employed in the sport-related industries contained in the SSA. That was almost 4.4% of the total of employed people, 40.348 million. |
