Abstract: | In this paper, Event Studies are conducted to examine the effects of political events on foreign exchange returns in Malaysia, Singapore and Philippines. The political events of interest in this paper cover the general elections in all three countries. Some of the salient findings are as follows. First, the 13th General Election in Malaysia led to a mostly negative response from the foreign exchange market, with a sharper than expected Ringgit depreciation. Second, the 14th Malaysian General Election elicited a rather positive reaction from the foreign exchange market – there was far less depreciation of the Ringgit than what was previously believed. Third, both the 2011 and 2015 General Elections in Singapore were followed by positive reactions from the market. Fourth, presidential elections in the Philippines produced contrasting results – the election of Benigno Aquino III was greeted with optimism, whereas his successor, Rodrigo Duterte received a less welcoming reception from the foreign exchange market, with the Philippine Peso depreciating more than the predicted amount in the market model. |

Abstract: | In this chapter, we analyze the participation of Singapore in the global value chains (GVC): how much of its gross exports are GVC-related trade, how downstream it is, and which countries are its key upstream and downstream trade partners. This is done at both the country aggregate and at the sector level. New formulas are proposed in the gross export decomposition framework of Koopman, Wang and Wei (2014) and Borin and Mancini (2017), to characterize a country/industry’s downstreamness in the GVC and the importance of each trade partner in its backward/forward linkages. Singapore is found to start off with a very high level of GVC trade in 1995, but its unique status became diluted over the years. East Asian countries (such as Taiwan and Korea) had become equally, if not more, active players in the GVCs in the last two decades. In contrast with Japan and the US, Singapore was overall located at the lower end of the GVC (with similar downstreamness index as China). Malaysia and the US used to be the top two upstream/downstream partners of Singapore in 1995, but by 2011, China had taken up substantially more weight and replaced the US’s status. |

Abstract: | With the realization of massive infrastructure development in the last five years, including the disbursement of Village Funds of Rp 187 trillion since four years ago, it is time for the Government to re-navigate its development goals by elaborating development. Now, the Government focuses on developing Indonesia from "inside", namely in terms of Human Resources (HR). This brief review aims to see how the focus on the development of Indonesian HR in the future. This paper shows that one of the prerequisites for becoming a developed country is quality human resources. For Indonesia, the Human Development Index (HDI) of Indonesia in 2018 will reach 71.39. This figure increased by 0.58 points or grew 0.82 percent compared to 2017. This study also produced information that infrastructure development that has been carried out on a large scale in the last five years is an excellent solution to overcome the problem of the distribution of quality human resources in Indonesia. Infrastructure development will enhance good connections between regions in Indonesia to encourage equality between regions. Thus, the quality of existing human resources will not accumulate in one particular area. This study adds that the closest challenge is preparing the community as fully as possible for the presence of the industrial era 4.0. Responding to this natural phenomenon, Indonesians have to make themselves successfully passing this era. |

Abstract: | The latest Susenas survey in 2018 states that urban residents over the age of 5 years and overuse the internet more. In 2018, urban internet users were 70%, and the remaining 30% are in rural areas. However, the 2017 Susenas survey stated that internet users in rural areas are still 28%. Thus, the use of the internet by rural communities also increased from the previous period, and rural communities began to utilize the internet in their daily lives. It turns out that the use of the internet will also drive the economy so that there is economic potential, and ultimately there is potential for state revenue, such as taxes. This short-paper tries to see if the Indonesian government can succeed in collecting taxes from economic activities in cyberspace. By using library research methods, this paper reveals that it turns out that Great Britain is the first country to tax Google successfully. However, the amount paid was relatively small, which was around 20.4 million pounds in 2013, whereas the value of sales made by Google at that time reached 3.8 billion pounds. In 2015, Indonesia finally became the fourth country to succeed in getting taxes from Google besides the UK, India, and Australia. However, the amount of tax revenue is not stated. The findings of this short-paper are as a first step to explore further the potential of state revenue from digital economic activities. |

Abstract: | Women’s representation in Indonesia like many other countries in the world, remain considerably low. Therefore, both women activists and the government have been trying to increase women’s descriptive representation in order to increase their substantive representation, since it has been argued that females as lawmakers are more concerned about well-being issues. This paper focuses on the impacts of the descriptive representation of women in local politics. It examines the impacts of having more female in politics on the proportions of budget allocation in the municipalities budget by using data from municipalities in Indonesia between 2010 and 2017. This study also observes the gender effect on policies related to infrastructure access which women, as homemakers, strongly care about, namely household access to safe water, safe sanitation and electricity. The results indicate that the gender of a politician matters in terms of the policy outcomes. Women in the Regional House of Representatives are more likely to increase the budgets for environment, housing and public facility and health, but reduce the proportions allocated for economy and education. Likewise, a female leader is a statistically significant factor in the allocation of more government spending on health, but reduces funding for education. In terms of the more concrete policies, female representatives also positively affect the households’ opportunities to obtain better access to safe water, safe sanitation, and electricity, whilst a female regent/mayor only impacts household access to safe sanitation. |

The findings of this short-paper are as a first step to explore further the potential of state revenue from digital economic activities. |

Abstract: | This paper focuses on the pricing of continuous geometric Asian options (GAOs) under a multifactor stochastic volatility model. The model considers fast and slow mean reverting factors of volatility, where slow volatility factor is approximated by a quadratic arc. The asymptotic expansion of the price function is assumed, and the first order price approximation is derived using the perturbation techniques for both floating and fixed strike GAOs. Much simplified pricing formulae for the GAOs are obtained in this multifactor stochastic volatility framework. The zeroth order term in the price approximation is the modified Black-Scholes price for the GAOs. This modified price is expressed in terms of the Black-Scholes price for the GAOs. The accuracy of the approximate option pricing formulae is established, and the model parameter is also estimated by capturing the volatility smiles. |

Abstract: | Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) is a buffer of the national economy that it proved able to survive during the monetary crisis in Indonesia in 1997-1998. On the one hand, MSMEs have a strong resilience to the economic crisis. On the other hand, the development of MSMEs is faced with complex problems. This research departs from the complexity of the problems faced in developing Tapioca Starch business. This study aims to understand the problems faced by SMEs in developing Tapioca Flour Business in Kediri and prepare concrete steps to solve the problem. This research used descriptive qualitative method with data collection technique of interview, observation, and documentation. The results of this study indicated that the problems faced by the Tapioca flour business in Kediri are that they have no the formation of the business in a business group, the lack of human resources skills in developing the business, the limited business capital, and the dependence of the entrepreneurs on the middlemen directly and not to the detriment of entrepreneurs. The steps proposed for such issues include the formation of business groups, strengthening cooperative networks with business groups, markets, and cassava growers, and strengthening venture capital through saving and loan systems |

Abstract: | I ask whether electrification causes industrial development. I combine newly digitized data from the Indonesian state electricity company with rich manufacturing census data. To understand when and how electrification can cause industrial development, I shed light on an important economic mechanism - firm turnover. In particular, I study the effect of the extensive margin of electrification (grid expansion) on the extensive margin of industrial development (firm entry and exit). To deal with endogenous grid placement, I use an instrumental variable approach exploiting the location of colonial electric infrastructure and the need for an interconnected grid in the island of Java. I find that electrification causes industrial development by increasing the number of manufacturing firms, manufacturing workers, and manufacturing output. Electrification increases firm entry rates, but also exit rates. Higher turnover rates lead to higher average productivity and induce reallocation towards more productive firms. This is consistent with electrification lowering entry costs, increasing competition and forcing unproductive firms to exit more often. |

Abstract: | The farm household model, in which decisions about production and consumption are made simultaneously, lies at the heart of many models of development. Empirically modelling these simultaneous choices is not straightforward. The vast majority of empirical studies assume that farm households behave as if markets are complete in which case decision-making simplifies to a recursive system where consumption choices can be treated as if they are made after all production decisions. Previous empirical tests of this assumption have relied on restrictions on production decisions. We develop a new approach to testing based on household consumption choices and implement the procedure using data from rural Indonesia. Relative to production-side tests, the consumption-based test is well-suited to identifying those farm households in any setting whose behavior is consistent with complete markets and those for whom the assumption is rejected. We find the recursion assumption is not rejected for larger farmers but is rejected for small farmers. The tests are straightforward to implement and the results of the tests provide new opportunities to identify the behaviors that households adopt in the face of incomplete markets. |

Abstract: | This paper explores the effects of political events on foreign exchange returns in Malaysia. We identify five recent events that induce political uncertainty on investors, namely the 13th General Election (GE13), the imprisonment of a key opposition politician, the scandal from the 1MDB exposé, the appointment of a new Central Bank Governor and the 14th General Election (GE14). Using an event study, our findings show that the imprisonment of the opposition party leader triggered a favourable response from the foreign exchange market. However, market reactions to the 1MDB scandal were followed largely unfavourable. The GE13 triggered unfavourable market response, while the reverse is true for market reactions to GE14. Market response to the appointment of the new Central Bank Governor was rather favourable. The Event Study is the first of its kind that examines the foreign exchange market implications of key political events in Malaysia. There are practical considerations emanating from these findings. |

Abstract: | We develop analytical solutions for the characteristic function of the integrated short-term rate process using the Fourier-cosine series. The method allows us to study the pricing of Asian interest rate options for a broad class of affine jump-diffusion models. In particular, we provide closed-form Fourier-cosine series representations for the price and the delta-hedge of Asian interest rate options under the augmented Vasicek model. In a numerical study, we show that Asian interest rate option prices can be accurately and efficiently approximated by truncating their series representations. The proposed procedure is calculated fast and is superior in accuracy when compared to the existing numerical methods used to price Asian interest rate options. |

Abstract: | Chinatown is one of the ethnic villages that have existed since the British colonial period. Chinatown has a long historical background, declining quality in the post-war world, into a slum environment until it is conserved by the government and a tourism asset of Singapore. Chinatown is a traditional Chinese nuanced area, with homes and traditional culture still preserved. The building in Chinatown traditional architecture is still maintained. In 1843 Chinatown became famous and visited by many tourists with local uniquess it has. This causes the density and flow of people coming and going increasingly. So in 1885 Chinatown was facilitated by public transportation is steam train, electric train and trolley bus in 1929. |

Abstract: | Albeit economic growth of global economies is increasing, nexus of green economic growth, innovation, and financial development needs to be thoroughly understood to make prudent economic policies for sustainability. The research question intends to identify the green growth promoting policies and impact of innovation and financial systems on sustainable economic growth. Rationale for the research is to provide pragmatic evidences to build up economic systems that lead green growth under the emission control and abatement. Empirical approach is used to (i) estimate augmented-Green-Solow model for ASEAN countries (ii) EKC is also estimated with Generalized Method of Moments (GMM) estimation to reveal the impact of financial development, innovation, and trade openness using World Bank data from 1980 to 2014. The empirical results indicate, across estimation methods and specifications, a strong correlation of the innovation, financial development and CO2 emissions per capita for green growth. Further, increase of innovation and financial structure leads the economies to be sustainable with increase of abatement cost with technological adaptation, and human capital. The implications of the study are to deliberate on the determinants of green growth to promote sustainable development in the economies. Finally, the paper guides policymakers to reform financial and innovation systems to achieve advancement in green technologies adapting sustainable economic policies for green growth. |

Abstract: | We study Random Social Choice Functions (or RSCFs) in a standard ordinal mech-anism design model. We introduce a new preference domain called a hybrid domain which includes as special cases as the complete domain and the single-peaked domain. We characterize the class of unanimous and strategy-proof RSCFs on these domains and refer to them as Restricted Probabilistic Fixed Ballot Rules (or RPFBRs). These RSCFs are not necessarily decomposable, i.e., cannot be written as a convex combina-tion of their deterministic counterparts. We identify a necessary and sufficient condition under which decomposability holds for anonymous RPFBRs. Finally, we provide an axiomatic justification of hybrid domains and show that every connected domain satis-fying some mild conditions is a hybrid domain where the RPFBR characterization still prevails. |

Abstract: | We quantify the supply-side determinants of quality specialization across space. Specifically, we complement the quality specialization literature in international trade and study how larger cities specialize in higher-quality goods within a country. In our general equilibrium model, firms in larger cities produce goods with higher quality, because agglomeration benefits accrue more to skilled workers who are also more efficient in upgrading quality. Two channels are at work in our model. The first channel is through the treatment effect of agglomeration, such that firms become more productive if they locate in a larger city. The second channel works through sorting, in that more pro-ductive firms receive higher agglomeration benefits and endogenously sort into larger cities. These two effects are further mitigated by the increasing skill premium with respect to city size, though the latter is dominated in the spatial equilibrium. Using firm-level data from China, we structurally estimate the model and find that product quality is on average 23% higher in big cities than that of small cities. We further find that agglomeration forces account for half of the quality difference in big cities while sorting of firms accounts for another half. A counterfactual policy to relax land use regulation in housing production raises the quality of goods produced in big cities by 5.5% and (in-direct) welfare of all residents by 6.2% through reallocation of economic activities across space. |

Abstract: | In this paper, we study score procurement auctions with all-pay quality bids. A supplierís score is the di§erence between his quality and price bids. The supplier with the highest score wins and gets paid his own price bid. The procurerís payo§ is the di§erence between the winnerís quality and the procurerís payments to the suppliers. Equilibrium quality and price bids are solved without Örst obtaining the corresponding equilibrium scores. We Önd that quality bids, the suppliersípayo§s and the procurerís payo§ do not depend on whether price bids are made contingent on quality bids. Compared to a benchmark of winner-pay quality bids, in which the losing suppliersí quality bidding costs are reimbursed by the procurer, all-pay quality bids tend to reduce quality provision and suppliersípayo§s, but they tend to increase the total surplus and the procurerís payo§. |
