Abstract: | Using the French anti-piracy law known as HADOPI as a natural experiment,we study the asymmetric effects of online piracy on cinema admissions. Applying four estimation strategies at different levels of observation (town, movie, country, and consumer), we find that the introduction of the law is associated with a 9% increase in the market share of American movies. This increase occurs at the expense of other movies. Although we find an increase in overall admissions, this effect is not statistically significant. These findings primarily originate from a high initial level of asymmetric piracy between American and other movies, which was attenuated by the anti-piracy law, resulting in a fiercer competition between movies. The results can also be explained by the behavior of younger consumers, and might be caused by consumers' budget or time constraints. We exclude positive shocks on the relative quality of American movies, the advent of 3D movies, supply side reactions by firms, and word of mouth effects of illegal downloads as explanations for this redistributive effect. |

Abstract: | The death of an artist constitutes a negative supply shock to his future produc- tion; in finance terms, this supply shock reduces the artist’s float. Intuition may thus suggest that this supply shock reduces the future auction volume of the artist. However, if collectors have fluctuating heterogeneous beliefs, since they cannot sell short, prices overweigh optimists’ beliefs and have a speculative component. If collectors have limited capacity to bear risk, an increase in float may decrease sub- sequent turnover and prices (Hong et al., 2006). Symmetrically, a negative supply shock leads to an augmentation of prices and turnover. We find strong support for this prediction in the data on art auctions that we examine. |

Abstract: | Cultural diplomacy has proved to be a strong mode of communication between nations and constitutes a mechanism of exposure and influence, that introduces the notion of mild power. It refers to the ability to “convince” through culture, communicating values and ideas for the accomplishment of ideological goals and functional targets. Also, it is closely connected to the formation of the identity of a country or a city as a tourist destination. Taking the city of Edessa, Greece, as a case study, this work aims to study cultural diplomacy in the present international relationships, as well as its contribution to the formation of the image/identity of the city, finally reaching some conclusions on the current situation. This particular city was chosen as a case study as it has a rich natural and cultural heritage. The documentation of the work is based on two axes. Firstly, the recording of the natural wealth, the material and immaterial cultural heritage of Edessa, as evidenced by the literature review. Secondly, in the primary survey conducted with a structured questionnaire, which included closed type questions and was distributed to active members of the Edessa population, in particular to citizens who members of cultural organizations are or are working in the field of culture. |
