Abstract: | We examine the link between information produced by auditors and analysts and fraud duration. Using a hazard model, we analyze misstatement periods related to SEC accounting and auditing enforcement releases (AAERs) between 1982 and 2012. Results suggest that misconduct is more likely to end just after firms announce an auditor switch or issue audited financial statements, particularly when the audit report contains explanatory language. Analyst following increases the fraud termination hazard. However, increases (decreases) in analyst coverage have a negative (positive) marginal impact on the termination hazard, suggesting that analysts signal whistleblowers with their choice to add or drop coverage. Finally, our results suggest that misconduct lasts longer when it is well planned, more complex, or involves more accrual manipulation. Taken together, our findings are consistent with auditors and analysts playing a key informational role in fraud detection, while managerial effort to conceal misconduct significantly extends its duration. |

Abstract: | International Institute of Auditor's (IIA) professional standards provide authoritative and normative guidance to internal auditors who must apply a risk based approach. This research provides a qualitative analysis of how audit departments plan their activities in consistency with organizations' risks. Our conceptual framework is the society of audit of Power who developed the idea that audit is an active process of making things auditable. Our methodology relies upon individual interviews performed with 32 Chief Audit Executives of listed companies and a focus group session. Our results are twofold. First, we demonstrate a gap between the universe of risks and the universe of audit. Second, we provide a detailed description of how auditors are then addressing and making risks auditable. |

Abstract: | This paper aims to test the impact of formal and informal interactions between audit committee (AC) and internal audit function (IAF) on the implementation of internal audit report recommendations. To do so, this study relies on a questionnaire survey of chief audit executives (CAEs) from Tunisian listed companies. Findings show that perceptions of implementing internal audit report recommendations are positively associated with auditor frequent meetings between the AC and internal auditors, the AC involvement in reviewing the internal audit program and processes, the AC involvement in the appointment of the CAE and informal meetings between AC chair and the CAE. |

Abstract: | This research is an attempt to assess the quality of the arrangement of the public organizations auditing in Benin, regarding the challenges in this field. Indeed, the frequent changes in this auditing arrangement raise questions about its quality. Our research is theoretically grounded in DeAngelo (1981) contribution that analyzed auditing quality in terms of auditor competences and auditor independence. Through a survey with auditors in public administrations (103 respondants), we collected then some data related to auditors comptences and independence. These data show that globally beninese auditors seem to be competent and independent. Beyond, based on these results, it is important now to research on some other factors that impact the quality of public organizations auditing. |

Abstract: | Our study aims to investigate the relationship between the characteristics of the audit committee and auditor remuneration. We examine the impact of statutory and demographic attributes on audit fees and non-audit services fees. We find significant negative association between the level of audit fees and audit committee independence. We also find a positive association between audit committee frequency meeting and the level of audit fees but we do not find a significant association between audit fees and audit committee expertise. However, this relationship is clearly complex and warrants further research. Our results also indicate that demographic attributes play a complementary role in enhancing the effectiveness of audit committee with respect to audit quality. |

Abstract: | The objective of this paper, is to highlight the reality of the audit expectation gap between auditors and beneficiaries of the audit services, in Algeria, and determinate the reasons of this phenomenon and its effects, in order to provide possible solutions to narrow this gap, because it?s final elimination is impossible. To achieve the objective of this research we refer to the literature research realized in this subject in some developed and developing countries, Extracting and analyzing their results, for to develop an integrated theoretical framework to understand and address this phenomenon. We also distributed two questionnaires survey to the both ends of the gap (auditors and users of audit services) to gather data, the data collected were analyzed using the SPSS program. As a result, we concluded that audit expectation gap exist strongly by its two components (reasonableness gap, performance gap) in Algeria. |

Abstract: | In 2005, over 8% of Norwegian shareholders transferred their shares to new (legal) tax shelters intended to defer taxation of capital gains and dividends that would otherwise be taxable in the aftermath of 2006 reform. Using detailed administrative data we identify family networks and describe how take up of tax avoidance progresses within a network. A feature of the reform was that the ability to set up a tax shelter changed discontinuously with individual shareholding of a firm and we use this fact to estimate the causal effect of availability of tax avoidance for a taxpayer on tax avoidance by others in the network. We find that take up in a social network increases the likelihood that others will take up. This suggests that taxpayers affect each other's decisions about tax avoidance, highlighting the importance of accounting for social interactions in understanding enforcement and tax avoidance behavior, and providing a concrete example of “optimization frictions” in the context of behavioral responses to taxation. |

Abstract: | We study the responsiveness of small and medium-sized firms to a small-business corporate income tax schedule using population-wide administrative data from South Africa. We find sizeable bunching of firms at the corporate income thresholds where the corporate tax rate increases, implying active responses to corporate income taxes. The observed bunching is very sharp, and reacts immediately to changes in the location of the kink points. These observations suggest that a sizeable part of the response is driven by reporting responses rather than real economic behavior. We find indicative evidence that reporting behavior is linked to underreporting of sales and legal tax-planning activities. |

Abstract: | This research focuses on the financial reporting standards for non-publicly accountable entities. In this context, the draft financial reporting standard of Turkey compared with the financial reporting standard of the United Kingdom (FRS 102) in terms of the essential accounting policies. The findings of the research indicate that these two financial reporting standards are under the influence of the directive of the European Union (2013/34); however, financial reporting standard of Turkey is not in compliance with the international practice on important accounting policies (revenue recognition, and borrowing costs) compared to the financial reporting standard of the United Kingdom and it is conservative. |

Abstract: | In the context of European harmonization of accounting rules which was restarted with the adoption of Directive 2013/34, the French accounting treatment of finance leases is hardly justified. This paper reviews accounting, financial, fiscal and legal rules over leases to underline the anomaly represented by article 212-5 in French Chart of Account (PCG), which is the latest text to understand leases as a rental contract. This study aims at contributing to improving French normative environment coherence on this specific issue. |

Abstract: | This study develops and empirically tests an explanatory model in order to study the dysfunctional behaviors of financial auditors in France. it proposes extending the scope of the determinants in a relational and managerial perspective. To this end, this research mobilizes mainly Leader-Member Exchange theory (LMX), but also the role modeling and the assessment style of auditors performance. The results show that the three dimensions of Leader Member-Exchange (LMX), namely affection, loyalty and contribution have a negative and significant impact on the adaptive behaviors (respectively unprofessional behaviors : CNP, mismanagement of the audit team : MGE and Quality-Threatening Behavior : QTB). Also, results highlight under the effect of mimetic, managerial behaviors adopted by a superior have been shown to reduce the MGE, but also QTB and CNP. In addition, it was revealed that a favorable perception of organizational support and an evaluation focused on social criteria result in less QTB and MGE respectively. |

Abstract: | The persistence of a discrepancy between the audit performance expected by the users of the financial statements and that perceived by the auditors led to the establishment of the "justification of assessments" (JOA) of the auditor in France (2003) and similar practices at an international level. After a review of the literature, we carry out a work of content analysis of JOA in the French context. Our literature review leads us to reconsider the links between audit transparency and audit quality, as well as to question the modeling of the information content of an audit report. We seek, through our empirical work, to propose research tracks and methodological tools for modeling the information content of the JOA. |

Abstract: | Through Earnings management practice applied to the banking industry, several studies have shown existence of capital adequacy ratio management. However, they are mainly focused mainly on loss loan provision manipulation's. This paper deals with the possibilities of banking industry to manage the prudential ratio via the regulatory adjustments. Such adjustments are based on accounting equities. They are composed of conventional adjustments and prudential filters induced by the application of IFRS. Adopting diachronic and instrumental approaches, the study is based on a sample of European banks and uses regression methods by panel data. The results obtained confirm the possibilities of manipulation of the Prudential ratio. |

Abstract: | This work is an overview of a little-known and controversial subject: the Equity Method. It proposes a summary of its history and numerous algebraic variants, and accounting and financial research on the subject. We go back over its history from the early stages of consolidation in the early 20th century until the present day, and we underline its relic-‐ method nature in certain respects. It covers no less than six variants identified by this work depending on standards and countries, depending on whether it is applied to non-‐consolidated or consolidated accounts, and depending on the period. This algebraic variety places it between the Cost Method and the real consolidation methods, the Proportionate Method and Full Consolidation. It is a method suspected of fostering earnings and debt management, so most of the research on this subject is presented in this work, notably in the context of the positive accounting theory. But research work on this subject is limited in volume and irregularly distributed in time and space. We then show that recent regulatory changes in Europe (IFRS 11 and the amendment of IAS 27) and the relative scarcity of research, which is mostly British and American, open up numerous areas of research in light of the many issues which have either not yet been considered or have found no answer in the renewal of the regulatory environment. |

Abstract: | So far, literature has sought to describe and explain the advancement of auditors as a progression to the top of the pyramid, the climax in an auditor's career: co-option as a partner. By adopting an interactionist perspective, the longitudinal and micro-sociological concept of career enables us to consider promotion-to-partnership as a process that began the very first working day, and continues throughout the individual's career inside the firm. We demonstrate that invisible promotion networks, compared to "racing stables" informally organize the top-down structure of hierarchy inside Big 4 Firms, and play a critical but overlooked role before, during and after co-option as a partner. |

Abstract: | This paper aims to determine whether natural resources companies have better investor relations practices than companies in other industries, and secondly, whether classification as a natural resources company is a significant predictor of the quality of companies? investor relations practices. The companies under investigation are listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) of South Africa. Output from natural resources companies is a significant contributor of GDP in South Africa, an emerging and developing economy. In order to attract foreign investors, improve stock pricing and trading liquidity, South African companies need to signal to the capital market at the level that they are used to from companies in developed economies. Communications with the capital market is proxied by investor relations activities on the companies? websites. I find that on average, natural resources companies have significantly better IR practices than companies in other industries. However, in the multivariate model, being a natural resource company is a weak and insignificant predictor of online investor relations quality. Results indicate that larger companies that were listed more recently, had a Big 4 Auditor and were listed on multiple exchanges had significantly better online investor relations practices. From a policy point of view, investor relations officers at natural resources companies can still do more to improve their capital market communication practices to reap the full benefits from increased transparency, especially in the face of political uncertainty and declining or stagnant commodity prices. This study contributes to the theories on signalling and legitimacy by testing its application to natural resource companies in a sub-Saharan country. |
