Abstract: Given the economic and commercial implications of sports, the media value of players and teams is considered a major asset in professional sports businesses. This paper aims to assess the economic value of intangible assets in the tennis industry. In order to rank the media value of professional tennis players (both men and women), we measure the intangible talent of players based on their exposure in the mass media. We use the ESI (Economics, Sports and Intangibles) methodology to examine some issues related to the competitive structure of tennis. Then, we explore whether policies regarding prize money could be more efficiently designed to account for the economic contribution of the players. The paper uses weekly data on the media presence and popularity of 1,400 professional tennis players (700 women and 700 men competing in 2007, espectively, in the WTA and ATP).

-- This study examines how the UEFA Champions League impacts the market value of participating German football teams and the transfer behaviour of their managers. The goal is to verify the findings of a formerly conducted case study by a quantitative-empirical approach. It is shown that teams start a season with a significantly higher market value when participating in the Champions League. The main reason for that is a value increase of players who already belonged to the squad the season before. The results also indicate inefficient transfer behaviour of club officials when they have Champions League money at their disposal. Furthermore the study finds that clubs can only maintain the higher market value by regularly qualifying for the Champions League.

Abstract: We here ask whether sports participation at school is positively correlated with adult labour-market outcomes. There are many potential channels for this effect, although, as usual, identifying a causal relationship is difficult. We appeal to two widely-separated waves of Add Health data to map out the correlation between school sports and adult labourmarket outcomes. We show that different types of school sports are associated with different types of jobs and labour-market insertion when adult. We take the issue of the endogeneity of sport seriously and use data on siblings in order to obtain estimates that are as close to unbiased as possible. Last, we compare the effect of sporting activities to that of other leisure activities.
